“Forever plastics” is a term used to describe certain types of microplastic materials that are highly durable and resistant to degradation, often persisting in the environment for hundreds or even thousands of years. These plastics are typically made from polymers that are not easily broken down by natural processes such as sunlight, heat, or microbial activity. Forever plastics contribute significantly to pollution and environmental degradation, as they accumulate in ecosystems and pose risks to wildlife and human health.
Cellulose, the primary constituent of paper-based disposable items, naturally has the ability to absorb water because of its capacity to create hydrogen bonds with water molecules. When paper is utilized for disposable products, it becomes crucial to prevent the leakage of food and beverages during storage and preparation. As a result, many of these paper products are coated internally with plastic to enhance their durability and render them resistant to water due to their hydrophobic properties.
A short simple answer: Microplastics like Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), and polylactic acid (PLA) are used in foodware to make them oil & water resistant for a longer period of time.
